Winter (Almost Spring!) News

Gabriella's Studio Newsletter

March 2026

Welcome to my Winter (almost Spring!) Newsletter! Now that March is here, I can say that February is a tough month to get through for many people, me included. Painting the winter landscape over the last few years has helped, as I find winter colors the most beautiful. And yet, three cheers to the hint of warmth in the air and plum blossoms, daffodils, and crocuses popping up all over the neighborhood! Below are a few highlights from the last few months inside my studio practice.

Palace Coffee Show Update

Landscape and Florals
Palace Coffee Bakery
842 Pearl Street, Eugene
February/March 2026

Thank you to all the friends, neighbors, and colleagues who came by my February “Pop By” Art Opening at Palace Coffee Bakery! I feel the love and enjoy connecting with you through the work I am making of our local landscape. And thank you to several friends and neighbors who became collectors of my work for the first time! I am truly honored. My paintings will be up at the café through Easter, with several new paintings replacing the ones that sold, so if you have not had a chance to stop by yet, there is a coffee and a pastry calling your name! I’ve updated my Square Shop with the remaining works on paper that I brought to the café for the art opening. Works on paper are a great way to start an art collection. They can be matted and framed to your liking and add some Pacific Northwest flare to your interior design. Here are a few that I made last spring on my friend Kelly's property in Lorane, Oregon (and one that I made on the Ridgeling trail off of Willamette Street):

Featured New Painting

I have made several new paintings so far this year. Here's one I think you will enjoy:

We had one "sort of snow" day this winter (just a dusting on the valley floor), and as soon as I saw the frosty trees on the butte I knew I needed to make a painting. I'm lucky enough to have a view of the butte from my bedroom window, so at least I stayed warm while enjoying this winter scene. The sides of this painting are left bare wood with a little cold wax medium applied. I like the contrast of the wood panel sides with the painted image.

Painting/Poetry

Speaking of Spencer Butte, I’d like to share something very special to me. A new collector of mine is a poet, and he has written a beautiful poem inspired by the painting he purchased called “Mist on the Butte." One of the reasons this feels so special to me is that I often describe the way I see the world as a sort of visual poem. I see the colors, the shapes, the way they combine inside the frame, and I am moved by these things. I try to arrange the visual elements with care for how all the parts effect one other, and the vision I see in my mind's eye is often paired down to precise essentials. I love the idea of one work of art inspiring another and I welcome future collaborations with creative people of all stripes! With his permission, here is “Mist on the Butte” by Tommie Yeo:

Mist on the Butte

Shroud me in your elegance.

Show me solely in my parts.

Surround all of my mystery,

with all of your simple heart.

Lay all your weight upon me.

I am beholden to it eternally.

Shift comfortably into place,

and so make your accordance.

The morning air will meet you.

Its cold chill brings us warmth.

A soft encompassing embrace,

held between us from the start.

Bear my witness, keep me close.

Leave me heavy with your grace.

For despite the worldly demands,

I know that we'll be united again.

A Poem by Tommie Yeo

Collectors Corner

Along the same lines, it is a pure delight when I get to see what my paintings look like inside a collector's home. Thank you to two recent collectors for allowing me to share their photos with you. If you have artwork of mine that you'd like to showcase, please send me a photo!

Five Minute Drawings

I have embraced the notion that even 5 minutes of focused creative thought each day can keep the thread going when life gets tough. It might be taking care of kids, parents, work, illness, or other things, but we have all experienced times when we have to switch over to survival mode. I know it doesn't sound like much, but 5-minutes of drawing every day allows for so much less friction upon returning to my studio when the pressure eases. And often, once I get going, I stay in creative mode longer and make satisfying work in a shorter window of time than I previously thought was possible. Here are a few of my 5-minute sketches:

Art for Oregon Mozart Players

Lastly, I am pleased to share that I’ve been invited to showcase my painting at the Oregon Mozart Players annual fundraising event on April 19th at the Cambell Center in Eugene Oregon. Since 1982 the OMP have "been committed to two core purposes: to perform the rich repertoire of chamber orchestra music and share this music with the Eugene-Springfield community." I have been a fan of the OMP for years and try to attend their concerts regularly (especially their Candlelight Concerts in December!). I played classical violin as a child, and I always feel the most relaxed sitting in a beautiful recital space letting the vibrational waves of the music wash over me. I close my eyes and feel myself breathing deep. My paintings will have a floral theme to honor the return of spring. There is one blossoming plum tree in particular around the corner that I am using as my muse. Here is a sneak peek of a plein air painting I made on site, and a study I made for a still life painting I am currently working on. 60% of the proceeds from sales of artwork at the event will go to support the OMP. Stay “tuned” for more info!

Help My Newsletter Grow

One of my goals right now is to find the joy in sharing my work and to connect with kindred spirits, art collectors, designers, and anyone who cares about the power of the creative arts. If you know someone who loves painting, needs art for their home, and/or is interested in thoughts on the creative process, would you pass this along to them? If you are not already a subscriber, here is the link to sign up for my Newsletter. I promise to share with honesty the beauty and the struggle of being a creative person in a world that often devalues this path. If you have been meaning to get back to something creative in your life, do it today, even if only for five minutes! I know you will feel the power of that small move.

With Gratitude,

Gabriella Soraci
